Making a topic resource

Making an image bank

A. Find images

Find art images by using one of the internet art database sites on my  art links page e.g.

www.artchive.com

www.art4net.com

Archive screenshot

Find other images by using a search engine e.g.

www.google.com > click on Images Google screenshot

B. Save images

When you find an image that you like Control-Click once with your mouse to bring up the menu below:

  • The best option is to select Download Image to Disk, then navigate to a picture file that you have created e.g. RosPics
  • Make sure that the picture type is GIF (*.gif) or JPEG (*.jpg). JPEGS are often better quality, but both types compress files to give smaller sizes.

Extra resources: information on file types and sizes

C. Copy images

If you don’t want to store the image, but use it only once in a worksheet, for example, then select the Copy Image option from the same menu you got when you Control-Clicked on your picture, then open a word processing application such as AppleWorks and click on Paste (or go to Edit > Paste). This is less flexible than saving, however, as the picture is then part of a document and cannot be used separately.

Making a topic resource

A. Save web pages

You can build topic resources of web pages worksheets and images by saving them to a named folder with a hyper-linked index. Pupils do not need to be online to access these. If your school has an intranet, the folders can be used as a general departmental resource.
  1. Make a new folder and name it e.g. Year 7 Identity

  2. Click OK
  3. When you find a useful web page for your project go to File > Save As
4. Don’t forget to copy the URL of the page by clicking on it in the Address bar > Edit > Copy

http://masters-of-photography.com/S/sherman/sherman.html

This makes typing mistakes less likely
5. Finally, if you open a word processing program you can start to make a hyper-linked index by clicking on the Paste icon or Edit > Paste
This will be a live Internet link i.e. it will take you to the website if you are connected to the Internet. You may not want pupils to be able to do this. Instead, you can link to the page you have saved to view it offline with a hyper-linked index. For instructions see below.

B. Make a hyper-linked index
You can design your page in AppleWorks or any other word processing program. You could even make it in a Web building program like Front Page or Dreamweaver. The instructions below are for AppleWorks.

1. Type a list of all the items you have collected in the topic folder. These might be web pages, worksheets or other resources. My example list is organised under the sub-headings: Web pages; Example Animations and Exercises. Use names that are self-explanatory or add descriptions of the contents where necessary   Screenshot of example index
2.To add a direct hyperlink to the saved web page, document or other file follow these steps:
  • Highlight the text e.g. Running Horse
  • Click on the Link button on the Menu Bar

This icon creates a link to a web pageThis icon creates a link to another file
  • Then click on Choose and navigate to your topic folder > OK
  • Repeat these steps for each item on your list. You can save your index either as a document or a web page.
