Internet Art - PC version

Making an image bank
Making a topic resource

Making an image bank
A. Find images
Find art images by using one of the internet art database sites on the art links page. Try:

www.artchive.com

www.art4net.com

www.art4net.com

Find other images by using a search engine. Try

www.google.com > click on Images

B. Save images
When you find an image that you like right click on it once with your mouse to bring up the menu below:

The best option is to select Save Picture As…, then navigate to a picture file that you have created:

Make sure that the picture type is GIF (*.gif) or JPEG (*.jpg). JPEGS are often better quality, but both types compress files to give smaller sizes.

Extra resources: information about file types and sizes.

C. Copy images

f you don’t want to store the image, but use it only once in a worksheet, for example, then select the Copy option from the menu you got when you right-clicked on your picture, then open a word processing application such as Word and click on Paste (or go to Edit > Paste). This is less flexible than saving, however, as the picture is then part of a document and cannot be used separately.

Making a topic resource
A. Save web pages
You can build topic resources of web pages, worksheets and images by saving them to a named folder with a hyper-linked index. Pupils do not need to be online to access these. If your school has an intranet, the folders can be used as a general departmental resource.
  1. Make a new folder and name it e.g. Year 8 Animating Art

  2. Click OK.

NEW FOLDERS

If you have access to Windows Explorer, use that to navigate to the drive you want: Start > Programs > Windows Explorer

If not, you can go to File > Open and navigate to the right drive on your network using the Look in drop down menu

3. When you find a useful web page for your project go to File > Save As   e.g.

http://masters-of-photography.com/M/muybridge/muybridge.html
Make sure that the Save as Type option is WebPage complete *htm*html
4. Finally, don’t forget to copy the URL of the page by clicking on it in the Address bar > Edit > Copy This makes typing mistakes less likely
5. If you open a word processing program you can start to make a hyper-linked index by clicking on the paste icon (or Edit > Paste). This will be a live internet link, which you may not want. If you want to link it to the page you have saved instead, see below

B. Make a hyper-linked index
You can design your page in Microsoft Word or any other word processing program. You could even make it in a Web building program like Front Page or Dreamweaver. The instructions below are for Word.
1. Type a list of all the items you have collected in the topic folder. These might be web pages, worksheets or other resources. My example list is organised under the sub-headings: Web pages; Example Animations and Exercises. Use names that are self-explanatory or add descriptions of the contents where necessary.  Screenshot of example index
2.To add a direct hyperlink to the saved web page, document or other file follow these steps:
Highlight the text e.g. Running Horse

Go to Insert > Hyperlink or click on the button on the Formatting Toolbar

Then click on Browse for .. File

Navigate to your topic folder and click on the relevant file > OK
You can save your index as either a document file or a web page. Screenshot of index as web page
