This
is a quick way of changing screenshots (which are large bitmap files) into JPEGs or GIFs in your Word
worksheets or PowerPoint presentations to cut down on file size. It
only works on the page or slide, so you need a picture-editing program if
you want to save the original in a different file format.

-
Insert
the picture you have saved as a bitmap in the usual way: Insert
> Picture > From File, then click on the picture to
select it. Wrap and crop as usual.
-
Select the picture
-
Click on Cut – it disappears, but don’t worry, it’s stored on the ClipBoard
-
Go to Edit > Paste Special (not Paste)
-
Choose
Paste As > either Picture (Gif) or
Picture (JPEG) > OK

| Here
are two examples: a drawing made in Paint and a small scanned poster.
They have been saved as 24 or 16 bit bitmaps and as JPEGs or
GIFs to compare file sizes. Quality for the 16-bit bitmap is
poor with loss of colour information. The others have no obvious visual
differences |
