Adobe Photoshop 5: Create a Drop Shadow

  1. Select the object that you want to create a shadow for with the Magic Wand tool 
  2. Activate the layer that it is on by clicking on it in the Layer palette
  3. Go to Layer > Duplicate and name the new layer Image
  4. Double-click the original layer and name it Shadow

  5. Select the Move tool
  6. Check that the Shadow layer is still active and drag the shadow down and to the right in the image window
  7. Tick the Preserve Transparency box for the Shadow layer
  8. Choose a dark Foreground colour
  9. Go to Edit > Fill and select Foreground Colour > 80 to 100% Opacity > Normal mode > OK
  10. Uncheck the Preserve Transparency box
  11. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur and enter a radius of 4 to 8 pixels > OK
  12. The position of the shadow can be adjusted using the Move tool  
  13. When you have finished, don’t forget to flatten the image and save it as a JPEG to compress file size: Layer > Flatten Image
