Adobe Photoshop 6: Compositing 3
  1. Open  2 files:
    e.g. zebra.jpg; old_afr.jpg
  2. Click on the first image (e.g. zebra) to activate it
  3. Click on the Move Tool
  4. Drag the zebra picture onto the map old_afr  [this copies the image as a new layer] and position it where you prefer
  5. Close the original zebra image
The Photoshop interface
6. Select the Crop Tool and crop the map image to the same size as the zebra by drawing around the border and double-clicking on the selection to apply the crop.

7. Promote the map background to a layer [so that you can make it transparent later] by selecting it on the Layer Palette, then double clicking on it to bring up the Layer menu. Give the layer a name e.g. map

8. Next make a new background: go to Layer > New > Layer and name the layer e.g. background.

9. Choose a pale yellow foreground colour and click on the Paint Bucket Tool then on the thumbnail of the background layer: it will fill with the foreground colour

10. Now select the layer to which you are going to add a mask: zebra, and click on the New Layer Mask icon at the bottom of the Layer Palette

11. Choose black as the foreground colour and select the Paintbrush Tool with a hard edge and a suitable pixel size.

12. Paint out the background around the zebra. As you do this you will notice that black is being added to the Layer Mask Thumbnail on the Layer Palette although you can’t see it on the image.

13. Opt for a shade of grey for the foreground colour and paint it over the body of the zebra, leaving the head untouched

14. Select the map layer and use the  Opacity slider to reduce increase transparency

15. If you have finished editing your picture you can condense the file by merging all the layers and saving it as a JPEG: Layer > Flatten Image; Save As and choose .jpg as File Type

16. However, if you want to continue working on it, Save As a .psd file [unmerged Photoshop file].
