Paint Shop Pro 7: Cloning

Use the Clone brush to copy part of an image to another location. You work with two image areas: the source, which is the area you copy from; and the target, which is the area you copy to.

Setting the Clone Brush Options

1.  Activate the Clone brush by clicking its button

2.  On tab 1 of the Tool Options palette, set the brush tip shape and other options

3.  Click tab 2 to select a mode from the Clone mode drop down box. The two modes are:

  • Aligned mode: the source area moves with the brush each time you release the mouse    – you make one copy.

  • Non-aligned mode: the source area does not move when you release the mouse. Each time you release and then re-click the mouse, the starting point for cloning returns to the source – you can make many copies.

4. Select the Sample merged check box to clone all visible data. If the check box is not selected, only the data on the current layer when the source point was defined is cloned

NB The Clone brush can only be used on a 24-bit colour or greyscale image.

To confine the cloning to a specific area, create a selection before cloning.

Using the Clone Brush

1.    Position the cursor over the part that you want to copy.

2.    Make sure that you have activated the source layer by clicking on it then set the source  EITHER by

  • right-clicking the source area once [your computer beeps to indicate that you have selected the source area]

  • or by pressing  Shift and clicking the source area

3.  Activate the target layer [where you want to place the clone] by clicking on it.

4.  Press and hold the left mouse button. Crosshairs appear over the source area to indicate which pixel you are copying.

5.  Drag the mouse to clone from the source area to the target area.

6. Release the mouse button to end the Clone brush stroke.

7. To resume copying, start again at step 4.

Remember that the location of the source area depends on the clone mode.
