Paint Shop Pro 7: The Pattern Effect

This effect is available for grey-scale and 24-bit colour images only.  It allows for instant experimentation with different types of grids for repeat patterns e.g. drop, half-drop etc
1. Open the image that you want to use as a source for the pattern e.g. butterfly.jpg
2. Create a new blank canvas: go to File > New.  Make it quite big to allow for repeats (mine was 800 pixels by 800, while the figure for the repeat was only 100 pixels x 100) and select white as the canvas colour.
3. Click on your source image to make it active and copy it to the blank canvas: Selections > Select All, then Edit > Copy.

4. Click on the blank canvas and go to Edit > Paste as New Raster Layer. You can close the original image now without saving changes.

5.  For the pattern go to Effects > Reflection Effects > Pattern. You can make adjustments to vertical and horizontal offsets, number of horizontal and vertical repeats, rotation angle, exact source of repeat etc in this window and you can also preview the effect.

6. When you are satisfied click OK

7.  Flatten your image by going to Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten)

8. Save your pattern with a different name from the original e.g. butterfly_pattern1.jpg
