Microsoft Word: Graphics 1

Making a certificate: the Picture and Drawing Toolbars

Example merit certificate for art and design

The Drawing toolbar

The Picture toolbar

If  the toolbar you need is not visible, remember to go to View > Toolbars and click on it from the fly-out menu. The Picture and WordArt Toolbars should appear automatically when you highlight a graphic or WordArt text. The Drawing Toolbar usually docks at the bottom of the screen.
  1. Open Word. If you want your certificate to be A5 size go to File > Page Setup > Paper Size and select A5 from the drop down menu and Landscape as the Orientation. [NB Not all printers allow you to do this]. Alternatively, you can design the certificate as A4 and reduce to A5 when photocopying or use a basic DTP program like Microsoft Publisher.

Borders and Shading window
In Word 2000 go to File > Page Setup > Paper Size and choose Landscape. Select the Margins tab and click in the box at the bottom for 2 pages to one sheet. You get 2 x A5 pages printed side by side, although as you work on them they appear portrait style A4.
  1. Now choose a border for your certificate: Format > Borders and Shading > Page Border. Explore the options: choose a Setting (Box, Shadow etc), a line style, colour and width or click on the Art dropdown menu for a wide range of fancy borders. Apply to > whole document > OK
  2. You can use WordArt for the title of the certificate: click on the WordArt icon on the Drawing toolbar at the bottom of the screen. Format the title as you choose, but don’t forget to use Word Wrap/Layout (for details of using WordArt see separate Helpsheet)
